Green Jobs

The Dream Reborn
Brought to you by Green For All
and the Ella Baker Center

Honor Dr. King's legacy.
Connect with inspiring people.
Build the green economy.

Dear aline,

The vision for a green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty is catching fire all across the nation. Presidential candidates, major news outlets, and people everywhere are talking about this growing movement for "green-collar" jobs. In our hands, we hold the potential to beat global warming, boost the economy, and create real hope for all people -- at the same time.

On April 4-6 in Memphis, Tennessee, the Ella Baker Center is joining with our sister organization Green For All to host "The Dream Reborn," a national conference of more than 1000 student, nonprofit, business and community leaders from across the nation. Together, we will commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King on the 40th anniversary of his assassination and celebrate a new generation of visionary leaders. By bringing together green-collar practitioners and advocates, we will exchange our best models and ideas. And we will provide a forum for learning about the new green economy in the spirit of Dr. King's dream for racial and economic justice.

This gathering has the potential to be a landmark moment in this new movement -- with only five weeks to go, we need your help! Here's what you can do:

1) Register!

We expect this conference to fill up fast -- go to www.dreamreborn.org/register to get started. And don't forget to reserve your hotel room TODAY! With thousands coming to Memphis, rooms are going fast. The Dream Reborn website lists the last hotel blocks available in downtown Memphis, but you must sign up no later than March 13th. [link "The Dream Reborn website" to hotel page]

2) Spread the Word!

Everyone is welcome to register! Please note that in order to create an equitable green economy movement, we are committed to prioritizing participation from working class communities of color. With that goal in mind, please forward this e-mail widely, show your friends the website, and do everything you can to get great people to The Dream Reborn.

3) Sponsor a Community Leader

Working class people of color are the heart and soul of this movement. Amazing people are coming to The Dream Reborn: trainers, policymakers, practitioners, entertainers, scholars, activists, and mentors of every kind. It's vital that we can bring community leaders and youth of color to Memphis to make the most of this incredible gathering. Yet too often, local nonprofits, community activists, and youth don't have the resources to pay for travel, lodging, and registration. If you can spare anything to sponsor one of these community leaders to come to the Dream Reborn, please lend your support. We'll link you up directly with the people you're sponsoring, so you can hear about the difference you're making.

In Memphis, we have the potential to create something incredible: the launch of an unstoppable movement dedicated to fighting poverty and pollution at the same time. In whatever way you can, please join us.

3 job offers at Tikkun

Assistant Editor of Tikkun Magazine

Job Description:
Tikkun Magazine (the voice of spiritual progressives and the liberal alternative to Commentary Magazine, winner of the Utne Award in 2007 for the best spiritual magazine and of a PEN Award for courageous analysis on Israel/Palestine, www.tikkun.org) is recruiting for the position of Assistant Editor, working from our office in Berkeley, California in the S.F. Bay Area! The Assistant Editor is responsible for managing the entire production process for the magazine, including reviewing submissions: copyediting all articles accepted for publication: flowing edited articles to and from our design team and proofreaders: coordinating print and web publication: and managing all vendors involved in publication, including designers, artists, printers, advertisers, and database and distribution services. The Assistant Editor manages the annual production calendar: sets the print order for each issue of the magazine: manages all inserts and promotional materials: and maintains the online submission system. Excellent English language skills, proofreading skills, and editing skills essential.

In addition, the job involves:

*Representing with passion and commitment the editorial stance of Tikkun and the worldview of the Network of Spiritual Progressives (www.spiritualprogressives.org) in the public arena, challenging both the misuse of religion by the Right, the religio-phobia on the Left, the dominant discourse of global capitalist media & politics, and the technocratic and often spirit-and-values-deprived discourse of progressive media.

*Recruiting and managing unpaid volunteer interns.

*Expect to work at least one evening a week and one weekend a month (not interfering, however, with any Sabbath observers practices). In addition, expect to come to Torah study two Saturdays a month from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Expect to represent Tikkun/NSP and our Global Marshall Plan and the Spiritual Covenant with America in public settings (see www.spiritualprogressives.org for more info), e.g. this summer at the various national conventions of the political parties—and representation may mean sitting at a table, distributing information, soliciting membership in the NSP or subscriptions to Tikkun, and sometimes speaking engagements.

*Knowledge and sympathy with Judaism, Jewish culture, Jewish ritual, and the issues that come up in the Jewish world--necessary. Support for our position on Israel/Palestine a necessity (see www.beyttikkun.org for more info). Knowledge of other religious traditions and practices a plus. The Network of Spiritual Progressives (NSP), an international, interfaith grassroots organization based in Berkeley, California, seeks a full-time training and outreach coordinator. The primary focus of this position will be to expand the reach and impact of the Network of Spiritual Progressives (NSP) by creating, coordinating, and participating in outreach and training opportunities, and creating and implementing strategies to grow the NSP.

* coordinating logistics for several conferences each year, plus spiritual activism trainings, meetings, and other events; this coordination would be done mostly from Berkeley but occasionally on site
* researching conferences, festivals, and other events where the NSP should have a presence and coordinating that presence, including occasional travel to events to leaflet, staff an information table, and/or represent the NSP perspective in sessions
* coordinating travel for national chair and director of national programs, helping to maximize effectiveness of each trip
* setting up meetings with state and federal legislators

* developing outreach strategies and implementing them to grow our membership and grow public awareness of our approach to spiritual politics and policies
* developing efforts to get institutions, elected officials, media and other opinion-shapers in our society to support the Strategy of Generosity as the best approach to achieve homeland security, and to endorse and work for the Global Marshall Plan as envisioned by the NSP

*development skills including grant writing and/or fundraising are also a plus

This job is for a "people person" with excellent communication and proven outreach, organizing and event-planning skills. You'll need exceptional organizational skills, a sense of humor, a lot of energy, comfort engaging with new people, and a passionate dedication to the NSP and Tikkun philosophy as outlined in the Core Vision, available from www.spiritualprogressives.org. The position is salaried from $30,000-$45,000/yr depending on years of experience and expertise in organizing, outreach and event planning, and will require occasional evenings and weekends. We anticipate that it will eventually be self-supporting in that revenue generated from events will cover the salary and benefits of the coordinator.

The position will be based out of our Berkeley office, where you will work with a group of committed coworkers to heal and transform our world. There will be opportunities to take on additional projects of the employee's interest as time is available.

Please read carefully all of the information on our website, www.spiritualprogressives.org as well as The Left Hand of God: Taking Our Country Back from the Religious Right by Rabbi Michael Lerner, and then send to pete@tikkun.org or fax to 510-644-1255 a resume and a self-revealing letter indicating what draws you to this vision and how your skills fit our needs.

PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO RABBI MICHAEL LERNER, EDITOR, TIKKUN MAGAZINE

Rabbi Lerner has been described by thinkers like Cornel West and Jim Wallis as a contemporary
prophet. And he is also editor of our bi-monthly Tikkun magazine www.tikkun.org, a full time job,
plus the chair of our interfaith Network of Spiritual Progressives, and also rabbi of Beyt Tikkun synagogue which alternates services in Berkeley and San Francisco.

So, he is wildly overworked, and needs an assistant to help him on all three of these jobs, plus all the various specific projects he gets into. We are looking for someone who is good at keeping Rabbi Lerner organized (which means YOU have to be organized), who can arrange his travel and speaking engagements, keep up with his mail and emails, keep on arranging his desks, help with shopping and cooking for Friday night and Saturday services, attend all his services and Torah studies on the weekend plus work a 40 hour week, plus attend public events to represent Tikkun or the Network of Spiritual Progressives or the Beyt Tikkun Synagogue and recruit new members or publicize our events. We need someone who is creative and energetic, who feels comfortable in a Jewish Renewal style synagogue and able to organize people in their twenties to become members of Beyt Tikkun, and someone who is happy making calls to solicit support for Tikkun/NSP/Beyt Tikkun. We need someone who is charming and self-assured, and who can work with a powerful man who is always wanting to move faster to change the world and who is, hence, a demanding boss. And we need someone who is super-smart, interested in the issues
that we raise in Tikkun magazine and committed to the vision (read it at www.tikkun.org/core_vision) that Rabbi Lerner has articulated (a fuller version can be found in his book The Left Hand of God paperback version: HarperCollins, 2007).

You must be able to work with a MAC, using Word Perfect and Excel, and tell us what other computer skills you have if any, and whatever other skills you might have to be his perfect assistant. Please read our Core Vision at www.tikkun.org to get an idea of what our central perspective is about, and/or read Rabbi Michael Lerner's 2007 paperback The Left Hand of God: Taking Back our Country from the Religious Right. And also read some of the articles on our website from the latest issue of Tikkun Magazine.

Initial commitment: 10 Months.
Pay: $3,000/mo.

To apply: Write self-revealing letter about yourself, about what does and does not turn you on about Tikkun www.tikkun.org and the Network of Spiritual Progressives www.spiritualprogressives.org (particularly the Global Marshall Plan and the Spiritual Covenant with America) and about Beyt Tikkun synagogue (www.tikkun.org).

Tell us about your life, your aspirations, your experience, your previous experiences with synagogues and/or with Jewish Renewal, your skills, why you'd be good to work with Rabbi Lerner and his synagogue, and why Rabbi Lerner would enjoy working with you. And send names of 3 reference people. To RabbiLerner@Tikkun.org.
