Bay Area! The Assistant Editor is responsible for managing the entire production process for the magazine, including reviewing submissions: copyediting all articles accepted for publication: flowing edited articles to and from our design team and proofreaders: coordinating print and web publication: and managing all vendors involved in publication, including designers, artists, printers, advertisers, and database and distribution services. The Assistant Editor manages the annual production calendar: sets the print order for each issue of the magazine: manages all inserts and promotional materials: and maintains the online submission system. Excellent English language skills, proofreading skills, and editing skills essential.
In addition, the job involves:
*Representing with passion and commitment the editorial stance of Tikkun and the worldview of the Network of Spiritual Progressives (www.spiritualprogressives.org) in the public arena, challenging both the misuse of religion by the Right, the religio-phobia on the Left, the dominant discourse of global capitalist media & politics, and the technocratic and often spirit-and-values-deprived discourse of progressive media.
*Recruiting and managing unpaid volunteer interns.
*Expect to work at least one evening a week and one weekend a month (not interfering, however, with any Sabbath observers practices). In addition, expect to come to Torah study two Saturdays a month from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Expect to represent Tikkun/NSP and our Global Marshall Plan and the Spiritual Covenant with America in public settings (see www.spiritualprogressives.org for more info), e.g. this summer at the various national conventions of the political parties—and representation may mean sitting at a table, distributing information, soliciting membership in the NSP or subscriptions to Tikkun, and sometimes speaking engagements.
*Knowledge and sympathy with Judaism, Jewish culture, Jewish ritual, and the issues that come up in the Jewish world--necessary. Support for our position on Israel/Palestine a necessity (see www.beyttikkun.org for more info). Knowledge of other religious traditions and practices a plus. Knowledge of the current issues in intellectual and cultural life in the U.S. so that you can contribute ideas to the discussion of who we should be asking to write, which topics are significant and which are not, and which have the capacity to widen our audience and attract more young people aged 22-34 to our organization and to our readership.
*Seeking someone with smarts, strong people skills, able to do team work with strong personalities and hold your own, work well under pressure, love of ideas, boundless energy, progressive politics and spiritual aliveness.
Please visit www.tikkun.org to learn more about our organization and our magazine. To apply, send a self-revealing letter and resume (or even better, a video-tape or dvd) to:RabbiLerner@Tikkun.org. Tell us what parts of the Tikkun/NSP vision speak to you most, what parts speak to you least, what articles in the most recent issue(s) of Tikkun you liked most and which you did not and why for each. PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO RABBI MICHAEL LERNER, EDITOR, TIKKUN MAGAZINE
Rabbi Lerner has been described by thinkers like Cornel West and Jim Wallis as a contemporary
prophet. And he is also editor of our bi-monthly Tikkun magazine www.tikkun.org, a full time job,
plus the chair of our interfaith Network of Spiritual Progressives, and also rabbi of Beyt Tikkun synagogue which alternates services in Berkeley and San Francisco.
So, he is wildly overworked, and needs an assistant to help him on all three of these jobs, plus all the various specific projects he gets into. We are looking for someone who is good at keeping Rabbi Lerner organized (which means YOU have to be organized), who can arrange his travel and speaking engagements, keep up with his mail and emails, keep on arranging his desks, help with shopping and cooking for Friday night and Saturday services, attend all his services and Torah studies on the weekend plus work a 40 hour week, plus attend public events to represent Tikkun or the Network of Spiritual Progressives or the Beyt Tikkun Synagogue and recruit new members or publicize our events. We need someone who is creative and energetic, who feels comfortable in a Jewish Renewal style synagogue and able to organize people in their twenties to become members of Beyt Tikkun, and someone who is happy making calls to solicit support for Tikkun/NSP/Beyt Tikkun. We need someone who is charming and self-assured, and who can work with a powerful man who is always wanting to move faster to change the world and who is, hence, a demanding boss. And we need someone who is super-smart, interested in the issues
that we raise in Tikkun magazine and committed to the vision (read it at www.tikkun.org/core_vision) that Rabbi Lerner has articulated (a fuller version can be found in his book The Left Hand of God paperback version: HarperCollins, 2007).
You must be able to work with a MAC, using Word Perfect and Excel, and tell us what other computer skills you have if any, and whatever other skills you might have to be his perfect assistant. Please read our Core Vision at www.tikkun.org to get an idea of what our central perspective is about, and/or read Rabbi Michael Lerner's 2007 paperback The Left Hand of God: Taking Back our Country from the Religious Right. And also read some of the articles on our website from the latest issue of Tikkun Magazine.
Initial commitment: 10 Months.
Pay: $3,000/mo.
To apply: Write self-revealing letter about yourself, about what does and does not turn you on about Tikkun www.tikkun.org and the Network of Spiritual Progressives www.spiritualprogressives.org (particularly the Global Marshall Plan and the Spiritual Covenant with America) and about Beyt Tikkun synagogue (www.tikkun.org).
Tell us about your life, your aspirations, your experience, your previous experiences with synagogues and/or with Jewish Renewal, your skills, why you'd be good to work with Rabbi Lerner and his synagogue, and why Rabbi Lerner would enjoy working with you. And send names of 3 reference people. To RabbiLerner@Tikkun.org.
